5-5-2016 · Size of blank is a consideration. If you go above 3/8" sq in tool bits the amount of metal to be removed, and the time needed to grind any but the simplest of profiles goes way up. In most lathes that are set up for 1/2" bits, a 3/8 will work fine as long as you are grinding to a point and not a form tool. Form tools need whatever metal they need.
